Bad DC Jack Symptoms

The most common symptoms of a bad DC Jack are that:

• The laptop won't start unless the power cable is wiggled or at an angle.
• The laptop will run off battery power but not AC
• The laptop will randomly charge or switch between battery and AC power.

DC Jack Failure

DC Jacks usually fail from normal wear and tear or universal adapter tips that don’t fit snuggly, both cause the jack to wiggle around which weakens the solder joints and damages the jack. Laptop motherboards start around $350 and can exceed a thousand dollars depending on the model. Replacing the bad jack is often more economical then replacing the logic board.

DC Jack Replacement

Replacing a DC Jack is very involved and not for novices. The laptop must be completely disassembled, the faulty jack must be desoldered and replaced, then the laptop is reassembled. Without the proper expertise and tools you can cause serious damage to your logic board or other components.

Bring Your AC Adapter

Holding the power cable at an angle can also damage the AC Adapter so we ask that you include the power adapter with the laptop.
