Loose Flex Cable on Dell Inspiron 8600
February 21, 2008 by Jeremy Brock
I'll occasionally see a Dell Inspiron 8600 come in because it won’t power on. One common cause is a loose power flex cable connector. Reattaching the connector and inserting a shim will usually fix the problem.

1. Open the display and rotate it so it lays flat

Insert Use a flat head screw driver or spudger to gently pry the front cover off. |

The top of the flex cable has adhesive which can stick to the cover |

Use a piece of paper or other thin shim on top of the flex cable to keep the connector secure and prevent the adheasive from sticking to the cover. Then reattach the connector and cover. |

Awesome, unbelievable how simple....... Thanks.....
This is genius! This is the most useful yet simplest tip I have ever found on the Web! LOL
And no kidding by everyone here, it took less than two minute to re-power my laptop!
Save me a thousand bucks!
Thanks so much for the suggestion on the power connector. I had just upgraded memory in the laptop, and after the first reboot, the 8600 wouldn't power on at all. I was just about to either send it in for repair or buy a new motherboard
Thanks for your solution.
My problem was the Standby switch. (metal tab was bent down from years of abusive airport packaging) causing the screen to black out and the computer to standby right after boot. I clipped the metal tab and removed the plastic pin and the laptop LCD works fine every time! THANKS!!! this two minute fix put off a 2K decision! for that you RULE!!!
thanks,
Scott McClarin.
Jeremy,
Wow, thanks for this information. I thought my Inspiron 8600 was beyond help as it wouldn't power on or the lights may flicker a couple times and then nothing. I tried your tips and it powered right up and is back in action again.
Thank you!!
Jeremy,
Just a quick note of thanks for the unbelievably simple solution you offered to fix my computer. Start to finish I was able to repair my computer in less than two minutes....(and from a tech. repairs standpoint I have trouble just turning on the coffee pot!)
I was waiting often 5-6 hours fiddeling with the on/off button before it would finally go on!
I was truly about to purchase another computer!
Wishing you well.
Tom
Dude you're AWESOME!!!!!
